What is a Database Anyway?

Databases allow data to be stored, recalled, sorted and filtered, all of which are necessary for most modern websites. The database could simply store a list of email addresses of people who subscribe to your newsletter. It could also hold the name of each of your products and several photographs of each one, how many you have in stock, how much you paid for them etc.

Another facet of modern websites is that they often need to talk other people's databases.
